Hi Anup,

Communication is challenging in any context and situation. Thank you for approaching and, in some cases, tackling this topic in a number of your Curiousity Chronicles over the past year.

Please bear with me with some questions which I hope will clarify matters.

1. Are the elements or levels you cover your own or from some other Model?

2. I know your work history, but why do you feel that Culture is so dominant in your Model?

3. How do the elements or levels you illustrate in your text relate to the Diagrams?

4. Is Meta Communication a new or an existing definition or stratification of Communication?

Regards,

Bappa Choudhury

Although, I do not fully understand the questions, as there are assumptions which push me to respond in a specific way. But still let me give it a shot.

1) The “three legs of the stool” is how I visualize things, it is not a scientific model which is based on rigorous research. It is something I have observed over many years in my life and others I interact with.

2) Culture is a dominant player as it defines your language, belief systems, habits and values. We mostly are running on auto pilot till we hit turbulence! Interesting book to read - Atomic Habits, Why cultures collide.

3) The diagram just illustrates how different cultures approach a simple task of coming to an agreement. To read the graphic. Put yourself or any two different cultures in a negotiation table (without an understanding of cultural differences). How would you feel about the counterparty?

4) More about Meta Communication - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta-communication

Hope that adds more context.

Would you consider yourself as a Meta Communicator?

Thank you, Anup, for your prompt reply.

You answered my questions on #1 and #2.

On #3, the graphic of the image was very small and I could not read it well -- so I was looking for some direction in your text as to how to interpret the graphic -- and how the Model related to your points.

On #4, it was interesting to learn more about Mr. Bateson. I am still not clear on exactly what is a Meta-C so I cannot answer if I am one. NO rush,

Nothing further is needed.

Keep on being Curious. Keep on Writing and Sharing. I enjoy your posts.

Yeah. Interesting world when I wear someone else’s lenses! That was a trick question, everyone is a meta communicator. The conundrum is to what extent and what purpose.

PS: Just double click on the graphic and it becomes full screen!
